Lions Youth Outreach Symposium

    High school students representing 185 young adults from California and Nevada attended the 8th Annual Lions Club International Youth Outreach Symposium in Fresno, Ca. February 2 and 3, 2007.
    The Symposium was held at the Fresno Convention Center in conjunction with the Lions Multiple District 4 (MD4) Convention which also brought together Lions Club members from California.
    Young adults attended the Symposium were between the ages of 15 to 21. Many are members of Leo Clubs which are youth clubs sponsored by local Lions Clubs.
    According to MD4 Youth Outreach Chairperson, Elvie Marfil of Simi Valley, Ca. involving young people in Lions sponsored activities is an on-going commitment at the local, national and international levels of Lions Clubs.
    The theme is “Lions Outreach: Changing Tomorrow Today”. The Symposium featured two speakers, leadership seminars on a variety of topics and a community service project involving park clean up in Calwa Recreational Park.
    “It is our objective to help young people develop essential life and citizenship skills such as self discipline, acceptance of responsibility, the ability to communicate and get along with people of various age groups and make critical decisions where drugs and alcohol are concerned, Most importantly, we want to instill in these young people the desire to serve others.”
    Highlights of the Symposium were the two guest speakers, Dr. Beverly Tillman and David L. Roberts. Dr. Tillman resides in Pasadena, Ca. where she is the President of the Leap of Faith Empowerment Institute. She holds a Masters Degree in Public Health from the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) and Doctorate from Fuller Seminary in Pasadena.
    Dr. Tillman has written numerous articles on helping women succeed in professional and personal endeavors and is the author of the book, “Making the Most out of Your Life.”
    ;Roberts, who resides in Keller, Texas, is a retired professional baseball player who presents motivational workshops to young adults on how to make their dreams become reality. He spent 22 years in professional baseball both in the United States and Japan.
    Since leaving professional baseball in 1973, he has been active in a number of endeavors including spending more than 12 years working with emotionally troubled children. He co-authored the book, “ A Baseball Odyssey”, with Tony Salin.
    International President Jimmy Ross also graced the symposium; inducted 3 newly formed Leos Clubs, namely Asian American, Northridge and Parlier Leos Clubs.
    St. Kevin’s Catholic Church Youth Ministry contributed to the event by means of music and cultural dance.
    The most awaited part of the symposium was the Peace Poster Contest., this year theme, “Celebrate Peace”. Min Ji Yi, a 13 year old student from Tarzana, California.
